Over the whole month of September, PCDR and its trained instructors from the Network for Disaster Response in Panay successfully conducted five waves of Community-Based Disaster Management Training in five areas all over Panay Island – Aklan, Antique, Capiz, Iloilo Province, and Iloilo City.

A total of 130 community members and members of the Barangay Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Councils were trained during said series of training.

During the two-day activity, participants learned from different topics under the new and standardized CBDM Training Module developed by the Citizen’s Disaster Response Network (CDRN) and translated by PCDR into local language, which is Hiligaynon. Topics range from Core Concepts on Disasters, the RA 10121 or the Philippine Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Act of 2010, Community-Based Disaster Management as a Framework, Hazard, Resource, and Evacuation Route Mapping, Community-Based Early Warning System, Evacuation Center Management, and the Damage, Needs, and Capacities Assessment.

This activity is part of PCDR’s project, entitled Enhancing Disaster Preparedness for Effective Response, which aims to capacitate 11 communities in Western Visayas through different capacity-building activities. It is supported by the Johanniter International Assistance and Aktion Deutschland Hilft.
